What is the first thing you think to do when you want to lose a few pounds? For most people, lacing up their shoes to go for a run or hopping on an elliptical for an hour of sweaty boredom comes to mind. Well, you could do that and you would definitely burn some calories, but there has to be a better way, right? Thankfully, yes. Amazingly, there is a way to burn more calories throughout your day–I’m talking while you sleep, sitting at your desk, and on the couch watching Netflix. Do you want to hear this magical solution to burning fat? Are you sure you’re ready for this life changing advice? There’s no turning back after you learn this valuable information! ………Okay, here it is:
Pick up heavy things. Put them down. Repeat.
That’s it. No, really. That’s it. Maybe it can get a bit more complicated than that once you get really good at picking up those heavy things and putting them back down, but that is all you have to do to burn more fat in your sleep and solve those weight loss woes. Weightlifting builds muscle (and no, it will never make a woman “bulky” unless she is trying with every fiber of her being to look that way. It just can’t happen. Look for a blog post on that topic soon!) and muscle burns fat. In fact, muscle burns about 4 times as many calories while at rest than a pound of fat (6-10 calories/hour vs. about 2 calories/hour).
Now, none of this is to say that you should try to build muscle just so you can be lazy the rest of the time. I’m all for a day of binge watching old episodes of Jersey Shore (GTL, anybody?), but reality is that movement leads to health. What I am proposing is that, if the thought of trying to burn calories on a treadmill fills you with dread (like it used to for me), maybe you should try a different approach. Your body will thank you!
